Owl Egg Mold

61wDc640QOL._SX522_This isn’t really a recipe page, it’s really more for fun. I saw this little owl egg mold online a while back and just had to try it. The first few attempts to use it were an unmitigated disaster. But a dozen eggs later, I got pretty good at it and even decorated it on the plate. If you want to buy a mold and try it yourself, I made the picture to the left a link to where you can purchase it, just click on the picture.

Step 1: Find a good flat bottom frying pan. It was at this point that Justin started singing, “Flat bottom girls, they make the rockin’ world go ’round.” Good luck getting that out of you head now.
Spray the pan and the mold with non-stick cooking spray and let the pan heat up for about 3 minutes over low heat if you are using a stainless steel pan or medium heat if you are using a Teflon pan. If you are using cast iron…sorry, you’re on your own…

Step 2: You will need 2 eggs. Crack one egg at a time and very gently pour one egg in each eye socket. I found through trial and error that very large eggs do not work very well, the yolks are to big and don’t cook enough to stay together when you remove the mold. For me, Medium eggs worked best. I did have to take a fork and pull the white to the edge of the mold on a couple of them.

Step 3: Once the whites have set, carefully remove the mold.

Step 4: Using a wide spatula, transfer your little owl to a plate and decorate! He’s a little creepy looking, like some sort of Zombie Owl, or an owl with cataracts at the very least. No one in my house eats eggs with runny yolks (Or Dippy Eggs if you are from Pennsylvania), so in order to get the yolks hard enough to be palatable, the eyes glazed over a little. Still tasted good though.

I decided that instead of giving him a strip of bacon to sit on (like a branch), I would have him in a little nest of crumbled bacon and shredded cheese. I made that decision based solely on the cutness factor, not in the least because all of the pretty strips of bacon mysteriously disappeared. I’m not sure if I like him better with the shredded cheese tufts on his little ear or not.
